This series of African paintings was inspired by two trips I made to Africa: The Gambia and Tanzania.  During my visit to The Gambia, I had the opportunity to be involved with the Children’s Summer School Program and the Vocational Training Programs for Women, both at the YMCA;  the Windmill Project in the Village of Penjamu; and the development of Recreation Programs.

The most memorable experiences were the visits to the Schools and the children in the Village of Penjamu.  The school yard was filled with about a hundred scrambling, bouncing kids, poking, pushing, screaming and laughing.

It was during these visits that I took the photographs of the children at play, and eventually created the paintings “Precious Cargo”, “Grandfather” and “Boys School”.  The impact I felt as a result of my visit remained strong:  that these kids had so little in terms of material possessions, yet they were so happy.  It was Family and Community that were most important.

At that time, HIV and AIDS was a relatively new disease and most of these kids probably still had their parents to support them, love them, and to pass on the traditions and customs of their family and culture.

The Orphans in Kilema, Tanzania, however, lost that.  In 2007, I spent eight months volunteering at the Kilema Hospital.  HIV and AIDS in this community had almost wiped out an entire generation, leaving behind many vulnerable children who had lost one or both parents.  Extended families and communities are called on to provide these children with the basic necessities of life, love and support.

Aside from doing weekly food and clothing distributions, organizing funding for school and doing home visits to check on the kids, I also had an opportunity to do art with the kids.  Every Saturday I had about 100 kids piled into a makeshift art room at the Hospital.  We painted in acrylic, made drawings, mobiles and did tie dye. The giggles and snickers that filled the air with creative excitement hushed into a pin-dropping quiet as 100 creative minds melted their ideas onto paper.

The impact I felt as a result of my experience in Kilema, was similar to my experience in The Gambia:  these children had lost so much and yet they were happy and thankful to have their extended Family and Community to rely on. From my experience in Kilema, I created the paintings “Sisters”, “Elizabeth”, “In the Shade” and “Innocence”.  I am continuing my work on this series from over 1000 photos I took during the “Saturday Art Days” in Kilema.
